Guidelines we follow for our camera work :
- Should not be more than 30 minutes
- It should include both an Interview and overall clips of the theme we are
trying to capture. For reference we should have about 70% as interview and
30% for background and theme.
- For the Interview we have to cover the 3 following areas :
a) General overview of the concept/ theme - where this profession
overlaps and how it contributes to society (eg the Barber's role in the
social structure, the Chai sellers role).
b) A personal interview to cover aspects such as name, where from,
distance to commute, since when in this line of work, family members, if the
family is involved in this line as well, level of education, income from
this - is it enough ?, side-business necessary ?.
c) An overview about the profession itself - eg - in the flower one -
the different uses the flowers are purchased for - the nature of the
profession, different uses etc
The above is a general guideline. We use this and in addition discuss the
specifics for each before we go out for the shooting. Its important to do
ones homework during the pre-production stage. That way our interview can be
concise and yet cover all the different aspects we need. Also, Ajay has
directives of how to work the camera itself - in that wherever the person is
talking about himself - it should be head-on straight shot, but where he is
talking about the profession or its role in society - its a more angular
shot including the background or other material that he is referring to.
This is clearly exemplified in the Nai video.
