  • Nagaland (Naga stories)

It is evening. Shadows climb up the walls of houses of thatch and stay there. The sun has set but the western skies are still soft gold tinged with light purple. It is the quiet hour – all you can hear are the settling sounds of the fowls and all you can see is slow smoke curling up from each house. An hour later, as the light goes, but not completely, an old man, not stooped with age, but carrying his old age with dignity, tells the story of his village and the stone after which it is named. But first, he graciously bids his guests finish the food set before them by his granddaughter. A little later, when the plates are cleared away and they are served black tea, he begins in a low but audible voice: "My ancestor, his name was Rio, lived in the house that stands in the middle of the village, just about there," he points. "it was in his kitchen that the stone stood. It was an amazing stone for it grew constantly but his wife didn't like it and she daily hammered

it down with a stone. One night, in my ancestor's dream, the stone declared that before the rooster crowed it would grow till it touched the sky. That night, the stone kept growing rapidly, till it was just below the sky. Suddenly a little 2-day-old chick crowed and then, the great stone crumbled and fell to earth in many, many pieces. Look, this is its stump here beside the ruins of my ancestor's house. Our village came to be called village of the Long stone, Chiechama. " The old gentleman leads the listeners out of the house and points to where the stump of the stone stands today. The evening light lends a strange glow to the stone. The listeners look on in awe, captivated by the spell of the stone

  • Danth Katha

These are stories that are passed generation to generation via word-of-mouth.what it exactly means is the story you here from your parents about the happenings that happened some few hundreds years ago or may be few years ago. Nobody knows how much part of the story is a truth but its interesting and makes you believe on it because you have no other way to know about it... these danthkatha's are also used by the parents to teach their children about their culture and good values in life...
